Activities:
Here is a fun thing to do. It is the same as the old jumprope chant about teddy bear, teddy bear.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, turn around
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch the ground.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow reach up high
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch the sky.
Scarecrow, scarecrow bend down low
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your toe.
Crafts:
There is a fun and simple Scarecrow project using a tp roll and a popsicle stick. You also need a cupcake paper and various craft papers and scissors and glue. Cut slits in the sides of the tp roll to insert the stick for the arms. Take yellow paper or yellow rafia and cut to look like hair. Glue or tape to the top of tp roll. Draw on a face and place a cupcake paper on top for a hat. Decorate the rest to look like a scarecrow (remember to include lots of patches) .
Decorations:
A cute table decoration is to dress up dolls as scarecrows.
Food: I was unable to find any. I thought of a sugar cookie using shredded wheat for the “hair”. Perhaps ricekrispies treatsrolled thin and cut with a gingerbread man cookie cutter. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Literature:
Here is a list of books about scarecrows. Most of them are for younger kids. Use your own judgement, but some would be suitable for acting out.
Continuing Story
Each week there will be the start of a new story here in this box. Please continue the story in the comment section below. Completed stories will be published on the “Stories” page.
Donnie and his mother were driving down the road on a beautiful autumn day.
They drove by a large cornfield and in the middle of the cornfield stood a scarecrow. Donnie asked his mother why it was there. He thought scarecrows were only decorations. Mom told him that farmers used them to scare away birds that came and ate seeds and small plants. Donnie thought about this for a few minutes and then told his mother he had a better idea. He thought a motion detector that made a loud noise when the birds came by would be more efficient. Donnie and his mother finished their drive and Donnie got to work on his project.

Extras:Scarecrow Song (Sung to You are My Sunshine)
I am a scarecrow, a lonley scarecrow,
And I am out here all daylong.
I’m in this nice field all by myself and
So that is why I sing my scarecrow song
I am a scarecrow, a lonely scarecrow,
and no one ever visits me.
So, if you see me,come over and see me.
And we will sing and dance so happily!
Two Little Crows
Two little crows all dressed in black
One named Jimmy, one named Jack.
All day long the corn they’d eat,
In Old McDonald’s field so neat
They ate that corn until one day,
Mac got a scarecrow and shooed them away!
Away went Jimmy, Away went Jack!
They flew right off and never came back!
Another scarecrow song–(to the tune of Twinkle. . .)
Scarecrow, Scarecrow turn around
Scarecrow, Scarecrow touch the ground
Stand up tall and blink your eyes,
Raise your arms up to the sky,
Clap your hands and tap your knees
Turn around and stomp your feet.
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your toes,
Scarecrow, scarecrow tap your nose.
swing your arms very slow,
Now real fast to scare the crows!
Touch your head; Jump up and down
Now sit down without a sound!
